"Me too," she told him. "I just turned nine. Have you had other kids like me? Foster kids?"

"Just one other." he nodded gently. He looked back down and pulled softly on the threads from the fray in his shorts. "I didn't like her." he said almost in a whisper, his words just barely choking out of his throat.

"... Oh," she looked down as well. "There was a boy that didn't like me either. Are you not going to like me? The boy was really mean."

"Oh I'm not mean." he promised her weakly, but hopefully she believed him. Little Emmett was the farthest thing from mean. It just wasn't in him. To be mean would have taken way too much energy and will power that he just didn't have.

"So you won't not like me?" Mary Jane had a hard time trusting people. This was the fourth house she had been at, trust just wasn't given.

"I...Will not. not. not. dislike you..." he tried, not exactly sure if he was saying it right but hopefully it came out as he would probably like her. He really probably would. She didn't seem like she was about to lock him in a tight space and turn off the lights and leave him. Or ignore him when he'd get stuck under the stairs, since the door had to close to get anything out of it and something always seemed to go wrong. He was just lucky if she was around to keep him company. "I don't like being alone."

She shifted closer to him. "I don't like being alone either. I won't leave you alone. I promise."

He could only stare at her but when he was able to stop gawking or whatever he was doing he glanced down and nodded three strong times. "Thank you." he said quietly not knowing how else to respond to that. He wondered if she really meant it. She couldn't have it. It was a strange promise from someone he'd barely met two seconds ago.

"I've been left alone, so I know how it feels," she confided in him. "It doesn't feel too good. This is my fourth family. No one wanted me to stay, so I know how it feels to be unwanted too. I'll want you, too. That doesn't feel too good either."

It was like she already knew what he really needed when she hardly even knew him at all. After he'd mouthed another thank you followed by another long pause. "I want you to stay." he told her, disagreeing with all the families in the past that said not to her.

"I snore sometimes," she said, as if that would change his mind. "You don't even know me, how could you want me to stay?"

"Well b-because..." He was now getting worried that was her round about way of saying she didn't want to stay here. Maybe he'd already scared her away. He really hoped not. He was starting to like her already. "You already said you wouldn't leave. So you have to say." as if it were simple logic.

".... oh," she replied. "I guess you're right. I have to stay. Okay, then. I'll stay. Where am I staying?"

He smirked for one tiny second, but it didn't last long. He untangled himself and stood up. "I think we can go see it. They changed my room cause you were coming. I think it's our room now." Unless they were going to put him on the couch like they did when the last girl was here. He didn't like that. He would go back and forth trying to get his parents to listen to him, but if they could ever here him they just wanted him to shut up. Let them sleep.

She slid off the couch, holding Caylee by a leg. She never shared a room with anyone before. She started to get a little excited about living here. Just a little. "Me 'nd Caylee would like to see your room, please?"
