To say that Caylee was avoiding Emmett since reading his text message would be... pretty correct. But it was a harsh way of thinking about it. She wasn't avoiding him as much as... keeping her heart intact. And for once, she could honestly say that she cared how much Emmett cried or pouted. She had her own problems, and no matter how close they were, she most certainly could not share them with Em. Not when they circled around him and that god-forsaken text.
Caylee wasn't a hard person to figure out, not really. When she was happy, she smiled. When she was mad, she yelled. When she was upset about something, she went to the book store.
She never went to Chapter One unless something was wrong. If you came in and saw Caylee curled up near the cafe with a book, you could definitely say that something was wrong. Or, you could turn around and walk away as fast as you can, as Caylee's upset moods were never fun to be around.
So, when she was alone in the book store while she should have been in History, you knew something BAD was up. Not only was she in Chapter One, but she was cutting class.
She curled up further into herself with Of Mice And Men in her hands. On the little table beside her was her Moca Choco Latte. Emmett was nowhere in sight of her, another warning should've gone off. But, Caylee didn't want to see him. As of right now, her heart was mending.

Too bad, so sad, for her. Emmett came around the tall black shelf and did a double take to his left. His mind quickly registered her as a target found and he came out of his searching first shooter mode. He was just so surprised that he'd actually managed to find her and didn't wait to approach her. "Whoa, you're here!" Emmett wasn't looking his best, and was a bit on the sickly side. His mood could fool you well though, since he was obviously glad she was there in front of him now. He had a light and weak bruise at his temple that came up to his forehead on the left side of his face. He wasn't purposely hiding it or anything, but it wasn't something he wanted to flaunt around. Though his lengthy hair, natural eye circles, and liner made it blend nicely. If you couldn't see the contrast on the other side of his face that is. The boy came around to the side of the table waiting to get a hug from his sister. "I'm so glad to see you." his smile fading a bit. "I really have to tell you something." already slurring a bit, his words rushed and almost urgent.

.... Obviously, Emmett didn't understand the signs. Bookstore=Bad. Pft. Caylee's head shot up in alarm and she stammered at the sight of the person that she least wanted to see - her rejector. Taking rejection from anyone was a pretty hard thing for Caylee, and now that it came from someone like Emmett, it was very hard to accept. And she was sure that her shocked mood was reflected as she stared up at Emmett with wide eyes and a dropped jaw, like a deer caught in the headlights. Her jaw snapped shut as she started to tremble slightly. What a greeting.

"Look, I-..." he didn't know where to start. He wasn't asking anything of her but to just listen and consider what he was about to tell her. He wished he could have talked to her sooner but they hadn't been able to really see any of each other the last forty-eight hours. He, of course, assumed it was because she was off with her boyfriend, the same reason they hadn't been so in contact last week. It made sense. And he didn't mind as much until the coffee shop. "I made a really...horrible mistake. I don't know how to tell you this..."

All through this, Caylee was trying find her voice, but it seemed to be stuck in the back of her throat. She began to make a sound, but Emmett cut her off with his 'horrible mistake' line. So, she waited until he paused to say anything. "You mean how you rejected me?" her voice was quiet and meek but, anything but nice.

"W-what? No I meant-...w-what?" he repeated squinting at her completely lost at where she was coming from. She seemed angry. Like really, completely glaring hate right into him. "I-...huh? What are you talking about? I've been calling you, you never...you never picked up or-...Mark told you I came by, right? I haven't been rejecting you, I just...I just assumed you've been busy. Haven't you?"

"No, I haven't," she closed her book with a snap. "I'm talking about how you sent me a text that told me to go be with someone that you KNEW I wasn't happy with and told me to be happy anyway. And how you took the fact that I had feelings for you and completely turned me around and pushed me towards someone else. You rejected me."

Now Emmett was slowly becoming upset. "I don't want to fight with you, I have to talk to you. Really- and-..." oh screw it. "Um. You kind of have to be asked something to reject it- by the way." He was solid there. It was true. He had nothing or nobody to reject. "May, I don't understand. What's going on?"

"I was hurt. By you," she stated calmly, her voice not changing any levels. "I told you that I liked you. Even kissed you! And you make your little implications that you like me back. So I go to sleep thinking that in the morning I'll get a text telling me that you want to be with me, that you actually do like me. But I get scared. So I ask my roommate to read your text first. And it basically said that you want me to be happy with someone that you know I think is a jerk. That. Is what's going on."

He came down to her level, leaning with his hands on the table. He wasn't in her face, didn't even look directly at her really. "You're...you're telling me that... You're actually saying I-...You- if you wanted to...do this, why didn't you just-? I don't- Mary Jane! Why didn't you just just tell me that you didn't want to be with him? You made it seem like you couldn't decide!"

"Because I wanted YOU to decide, Emmett!" she sighed roughly. "I didn't want to just be like - okay, I kissed, I liked you, date me. I wanted you to say it!" she began to move her hands up to her face, and she felt wetness. "Dammit..."

"So you were testing me?" he summarized for them both. He smoothed his hair back, wincing a bit from his marks. "Anyway. I came to tell you about how I ran into Ari Monday. And I just wanted you to know I changed my mind, and hoped you didn't- you know, completely fall under his spell before knowing how you both obviously don't think of each other as highly as the other. But now that I know you don't like him anyway, and you were just messing with my head, or whatever. It obviously doesn't matter anymore. I- I don't even know why I'm telling you this. I'm just gonna go back to school. I-...again...I don't know why I'm even telling you. Sorry. I'm just talking out loud I guess. This is why I don't speak up, because I never stop- heh." making the smallest of jokes. "Anyway- wow, um. I'll go and...embarrass myself to all my other best friends." Emmett didn't wait for her to think about stopping him, to not stop him, to think about it all, nothing. He wasn't like her- he didn't talk just to talk, and wasn't just saying things to test her to worry about her response later. Obviously they both had different definitions of this friendship they were suppose to be having. He left the table, paying no mind to any of the things that had just spilled out of his mouth. He just wanted to get out of there. He hadn't been harsh with his tone, like she was to him. And believe it or not, his words weren't out of spite either. He just didn't want to be there. Emmett had got beaten up twice these past weeks already, he wasn't going to sit around and take another beating like this. Of course he'd never tell her that's how he felt about all this. Because she was probably going to start a sob story on him, how mean he'd been mean and how much his text had ruined her life or something. It was so like her.

"Emmett!" she jumped out of her chair immediately, ignoring the looks she got from the other patrons. She raced after him, grabbing onto his arm. "Emmett Lloyd, don't you dare walk away from me." she held on to him, then turned him around. "You better cut this 'testing you' bullshit, alright? I wasn't testing you, I was thinking and protecting you the whole damn time. So you don't ever get the idea that I don't care about you, you got that? I've cared about you since I met you. And it's been friggen doubled for the past two years. I wasn't testing you, I was thinking about how if I just came out and told you that I wanted -.. us, then you'd just agree, because you want whatever I want. You want me to be happy, and that's all you can see. Well you know what, Em? It can work two ways. I wanted YOU to be happy. I wanted YOU to come up and tell me that yea, it would make you happy if we were together. Because I didn't want to you to submit yourself to what could possibly be the most awkward thing in your life without you fucking wanting it," she let go of his hand and stepped back slightly, holding her hands up as well. "So go ahead, you walk out of here and you keep thinking that I don't treasure and love you as much as I possibly could. I don't know what else I could do to make you see it."

Emmett's eyes shifted around, horrified, as she went on and on- all he could feel was all the eyes on him as she seemed to be scolding him. He looked around the store meeting gazes with his own, terrified wide. He didn't look up at her until she started talking about how she wanted him to make this decision. I didn't want you to submit yourself to what could possibly be the most awkward thing in your life... Waiting politely until she finished, "Are you sure? Because...this is pretty fuckin' awkward." he pointed out, quiet and timid. "You kind of...made the whole thing awkward anyway..." reminding her of how she had a thousand texts, voice mails, emails, IMs, and missed calls from him. None of which she probably even thought of returning- in his mind.

Her expression didn't change, and she didn't get angrier with him, or more forgiving. "I was hurt, Emmett. Slice that however you want that. I'm selfish, I'm bitchy. Whatever. I thought that I had it all figured out. And with that one text, I felt that you were pushing me away and towards something that you thought was better for me, without even thinking about how I felt. So I felt hurt and horrible, so I shut off from you. It was a temporary solution for me, and it felt better than having to face you and go through all this."
