Prudence dragged her rolling duffel bag towards her new home for the next ten months--a dorm room on the campus of a prestigous performing arts school. The Webber School, the brochure said, was sure to help nurture the young artist in all its students. When her father's band was offered the chance to go on a nationwide tour, he was sure this would be the perfect oppurtunity for Pru to enroll.
"You have a beautful voice," Daddy insisted, "and you play that guitar like a champ, if I do say so myself."
Pru shook her head, "I don't think this is for me, Daddy. I'm not an artist."
But, as luck would have it, Pru passed the audition with flying colors, and was offered admission into Webber. Her father beamed with pride, as well as the administrators, who'd never had a celebity rock star's daughter at their school before.
And now, she was here, Daddy had dropped her off only hours ago.
"It's going to be okay," Daddy cupped her face in his hands and kissed her forehead. "I'll call you every night. I'll send you postcards."
"It's not going to be the same," Pru whispered. She diverted her gaze. She loved her father and he loved her, but her father also loved his band. She couldn't help but feel betrayed. She watched Daddy drive away in his car, waving sadly, declining his offer to come see her to her room.
After treking for a few minutes, dragging her bags with her, she came in front of the room that she was to be sharing with another girl and, not having a key, knocked tentatively.

It was rare enough for Caylee to be without Emmett, day or night. But to be alone and sleeping was just about crazy. She rolled out of bed, landing on the floor with a thump, and laid there for a few seconds, musing over her stupidity. She stood up, brushing off her pajama pants and ran a hand through her short hair. She slumped herself over to the door and peered through the peep hole. "State your name and business."

Pru was a little taken aback by the harsh one from behind the door. She opened her mouth to speak but no words came out, just a squeak. She cleared her throat and tried again.
"P-Prudence Kelly," she stammered. "I'm ... I'm your new roommate?" Her back ached from the wieght of the backpack she was carrying in addition to the rolling duffel.

"Oh," her voice became much more calmer and peaceful. She unlocked the chain and pulled the door open. She stepped aside so that the girl could come through. "... Hello there."

Prudence gave a quick, shy smile, flickering on and off like a faulty lightbulb. "...Hi." She moved into the room, dragging her bags behind her. "Uhm. So. You're Mary Jane?"

"There, uh, is no 'Mary Jane' at the residence," Caylee said, seriously. "But there is a Caylee. And she was rather anticipating the arrival of the new meat-- I mean, roommate," She flashed her a grin to show that she was only kidding. "Caylee Thayer. Pleased to meet you."

"...Oh," Pru frowned and went into the back pocket of her jeans to find the notice that the schol had sent her. "Maybe I'm in the wrong dorm, then...they said my roommate's name was Mary Jane. Shit. I can't even find my own dorm--"

"No!" Oh wow, this kid was new. "I'm Mary Jane. But, I go by Caylee. No one calls me Mary Jane. Well, my friend does. But only him. Anyway, sorry, I'm rambling. Just... call me Caylee."

She sighed with relief, "Oh. Okay. Caylee. Great. I'm...I'm Prudence. Pru. Well, wait--I already told you that. Sorry."

"Relax," she advised her. "I'm not going to bite. I take it you're completely new to Webber?"

"New, yeah," Prudence said with a small sigh. "I-I've never really been at a place like this before. Only public high schools. It's pretty wild."

"Welcome then," Caylee plopped down on the bed that she had already claimed, far from the window. "That's your bed," she indicated to the empty one. "And I left you some closet space and crap. Need any help unpacking?"

"I don't think so. Thanks, though," Prudence pulled her bags towards her bed. She hauled it up onto the naked mattress and unzipped it after she dropped her backpack. "I take it you've been here awhile, then."

"A week, at the most," she shrugged. "I've been spending the nights at my friend Emmett's dorm. My foster brother. You'll meet him soon enough. I doubt the day will pass and he won't come and visit."

"Oh," was all Pru said. The first thing she did was unpack her collection of framed photographs. She had three: one of her mother, one of her and her father, and one of her gray tabby cat, Ringo. "What, uh...what is it that you do? Here, I mean. Are you an actress?"
