He stared at his hand over hers and after a moment he quickly pulled his hand to rub the back of his neck, feeling like the biggest loser. To make it worse, he was obviously the start of what now occupied his parents. "...I'm sorry I was rude, dad." he apologized sadly for the phone conversation. He knew he hadn't done anything wrong but he apologized anyway for the sake of everyone. "Why, thank you Emmitt. I appreciate that." "Oh wonderful! Now you make me look like the bad person. Is that it?" then she turned her eyes on Emmett. "Is that it, Emmett? Am I the monster now for saying you were rude? But you're father just blows it off like nothing?" He leaned back in his chair, shaken from his mother's aggression.

Great, now they were involving Emmett in there too? She reached over blindly and took his hand in hers, not caring how hard she squeezed it, just as long as it was there. Here she lies. No one knew her worth. The late, great daughter of Mother Earth...

Emmett wasn't sure if he was squeezing back since he felt a sort of numbness in his hand. He shook his head and went back to eating slowly. Victoria settled back in her seat calmly and cut into her food with her fork. "Eat your food, Caylee." she requested, and gave her a small smile of sorts that faded in a blink.

She immediately let go of Emmett's hand, muttering an apology. With her now shaking hand she picked up her fork again and stabbed another shrimp, leading it to it's doom in her mouth.

And again there was silence in the room. Emmett at Caylee's pace, and glanced to her every now and then. "...I'm...so glad you both could come home with us this weekend." she told her children trying to sound as normal as possible, but the struggles with her husband eating her inside.

Caylee's eyes left her plate for a second so she could glance up at her mother. "Mhmm," she replied with a fake smile before her eyes shot back down. She didn't remove them as she ate her third shrimp.

"I...like the new plates..." he commented meekly, noticing the dishes they were using, he hadn't seen before. They were nice, actually. A pale purple, square but rounded cut. Kind of fancy. Since they weren't the traditional silver/white china most families use. "eBay." she answered him with a nod. She like them too, and this made her smile.

Caylee wondered how she hadn't noticed them since she had been staring straight at them for the past two minutes. "Yea, they're nice."

"Thanks kiddos." before finishing off her corn. Mr.Briggs put his fork down and took a break from eating. He wasn't full but he wasn't too hungry now. Emmett watched him until he glance to Emmett, then he quickly. "Did you um...wanna watch a movie or something tonight...?"

Her eyes shot up again, this time at Emmett. "Um... yea, sure. I guess. If you want to. It doesn't matter to me." she looked back down at her plate, finishing off the last of her shrimp.

He frowned at her, as he had hoped for an answer a bit more... Well not that. He looked down feeling just a little dejected and took another bite from his bowl. "Okay...whatever...you...want to do..." he said just above a whisper and chewed his green beans a little longer than he should. "Just don't let me catch you two up on the roof again." bringing up the one time she'd caught them up there at night. ...Not that it was the only time they'd done it, it was just the only time she'd busted them for it.

"Don't worry, we won't be," she consoled her. She drank from her glass of water, her throat feeling dry and cracked. "...Dinner was great," she felt like she should say something else. Like it was too quiet.

And Caylee didn't even answer Emmett, and continued talking with his mother. He stared at her longingly and wondered if he'd done soemthing wrong. It was because he'd ruined everything. He completely killed this whole evening and it was al his fault. Now she was feeling awkward and sad and it was because of him.

Caylee caught his gaze as he stared at her, and she smiled weakly at him, not quite sure how else to react. She reached over and took his hand, not squeezing it like before, but just holding it. She tried to push out the thoughts of being separated from her best friend out of her mind and turned back to her foster mother. "Do you need help clearing the table?"

"Aw, Caylee, you're so sweet. You seem so worn out, it's alright." she assured her and finished her glass of tea off. "Emmett will get it." she added later, making both males look up from their plates. Emmett wanted to melt into the floor. It was always like this at home. He was just thankful that they had a dishwasher so he wouldn't be scrubbing all night.
