She nodded, showing that she was listening. She tucked her legs under her as she listened.

"Beth and I got really close," Prudence continued. "We...just...I don't know. We didn't even talk that much in school. We had no classes together. My dad's band was pretty popular locally, everyone knew who he was, and that's part of the reason a lot of people talked to me in the first place, but Beth was way more popular than I ever was. One night there was this school dance and ... we decided it would be cool to go to the dance together, as friends, and ... then spend the night at my house."

Caylee didn't know what to make of the story yet, so she stayed quiet and let Prudence continue.

Pru run the tip of her tongue along her bottom lip. "So, that night, my daddy picked us up from the dance and we hung out in my room. We watched this old movie...Adventures in Babysitting?" She chuckled. "We both had a thing for the guy that plays Daryl Coopersmith."

"He's gay," she couldn't help but mention. "Believe me, I know... they're all gay..."

Prudence laughed, the first real laugh she'd given in a long time. Then she covered her mouth with the sleeve of her sweatshirt, as if by laughing she'd offended someone.

Caylee tugged on her sleeve, giggling. "Don't hide your laughter. I'm not going to shoot you if you laugh at my jokes."

She gave Caylee a tight-lipped smile. "Sorry. I'm just ... nevermind. Anyway. We watched the movie and we were singing along to that song at the end, over the credits. 'He Kissed Me', or something like that."

"Oh, I love that song," Caylee smiled softly. "Emmie teases me because I always have to get up and do the dance with her whenever we watch it."

"And ... well, we were singing and dancing. There was a feather boa of my mother's that I had, and I wrapped it around Beth's neck. She was blonde and beautiful and had these amazing eyes and these big, pouty lips...I said, 'You look beautiful' and she said, 'So do you'. And I said, 'Well, you're the one with the boa'. We were just being really flirty, now that I look back on it."

Even though Caylee couldn't picture her roommate as a flirt, she could definitely see where this story was going, now.

"And...well...she put the boa around my neck and...well, before I knew it, I was kissing her. It was...well, I really didn't think about it at the time. I didn't think about it being gay, I just thought of it as kissing. It didn't matter that she was a girl. She didn't seem to mind it either."

"Well, are you? You know... gay?" Her brow furrowed more. Not that she would mind, or anything. She just wanted to know.

Pru shook her head. "No. No, I don't think so. I haven't been with anyone yet...you know, been with-been with. And I haven't had any boyfriends or girlfriends. But Beth...she was just special. At least she was to me."

"Did she freak out once you kissed her?" She drew her legs up to her chest.
