A spinal tap? Ouch... "Are you sure there's no other way?" she asked him, her voice tight. She held Emmie closer to her in case he was about to freak out again. "It can be risky."

Mrs.Briggs looked from Caylee back to the doctor and shook her head. "Yeah yeah, I don't like that." she agreed and kept her wide eyes fixed on the man with the name tag. "No, we don't have to do the spinal tap- that's up to you both." "I don't want that, that's too painful." his mother objected, to Emmett's relief. "What we can do is keep him here and do some more blood work. Then put him on some meds and send him home. And if anything else came up you would just bring him back in." giving them an alternate. "Unless Emmett knows what's going on," glancing to him. "Even so that's only his issue with weight. What worries me right now his that his bones seem to actually be thinning."

"Like... osteoporosis?" Caylee raised an eyebrow. She turned back to Emmett, trying to catch his glance, but it was too downward. "Emmie... Emmie, you have to tell us what's going on. What do you know that we don't? Em, you could be in some serious trouble. Please, please... tell us."

No response. "Something like that, possibly, yes." He turned back to the parents and continued. "So right now it's pretty much up to you. I mean, we could wait a while until he wakes up a bit more from the drugs and all, and talk to him about it." he suggested, but either way. "We should still do some more blood test - but only if he's not getting the spinal tap."

Caylee grabbed his shoulders and forced him to meet her gaze. Her eyes were wet with tears, as was her voice. "Why are you doing this to me? Why won't you talk to me? Emmett, I'm so scared. You're not helping it. You always could've talked to me. Why are you shutting me out?"

Emmett's eyes were glazed over and he watched her absently. He let his head drop again when she was done and he was practically a breathing zombie. "Sweetie, careful." mama Briggs requested quietly a bit worried about how aggressive she was being. "He's had a hard day, I'm not sure if he even knows where he is right now." their doctor chimed in.

Caylee listened to her elders, slowly slipping out from Emmett. Her tears got slightly more vocal as she backed away from the hospital bed, her fist in front of her mouth, muffling the noises. She sank back into a chair. She knew he knew where he was. He had responded to her before. He had nodded his head and answered a question. She let out a shuddering breath and then an equally as breathy inhale. She felt like she was going to be sick. At least she was in the right place.

Victoria came and sat up in the chair next to her daughter and rubbed her shoulders gently. "I can promise you, no matter what, that he is going to be okay. Whatever this is, I'm sure it's nothing... it's not forever. And that he'll be back in school in no time." Emmett slowly sunk down to the bed and layed out on his side.

"He's not okay," she whispered. She didn't know who was in that bed, but it certainly wasn't her Emmett. There was some emotionless, wordless, mindless drone that happened to look exactly like her Emmett. "Something happened to him."

He was silent. He watched her as she got more and more emotional. "He was complaining of a lot of pain earlier. Did he ever mention any pains the last few days?"

Caylee shook her head as she looked up at the doctor. "He ... told you he was in pain? Verbally?"

"Well it was more like a lot of chanting." he cleared up, not looking at her but studing the information sheets he'd taken from the clipboard that had been hanging on the bed. "I wasn't sure if it was something related, or maybe when he collapsed. I assumed maybe it might have been a headache from that bruise on his forehead." though he wasn't aware that bruise was not exactly new.

"He's had that bruise for weeks," she told him, wiping her cheeks. "I-i... I probably did something. It was me. I-i... slapped him. When he fainted. He-he... he wouldn't get up. He was un-unconscious... S-so I slapped him an-and... it didn't work," she took a deep breathe, her words getting slightly slurred. "And-d... before that... I j-jumped on h-him. I h-hugged him. And t-then he turned around an-and..." she didn't have to finish, they all knew what came after. "I d-did something..."

They adults grew silent and they watched her break down, and shared looks with eachother. Even the doctor some how could assume that debating this with her wouldn't work. Emmett sat up sharply and his eyes searched the room terrified. His head snapped from one side to the other and he sat up more and when seeing the giant needle in his arm he mouth gaped open in mute breathless screams. He shuddered and hunched over rocking forward and back not knowing what to do. He crossed and uncrossed his arms infront of him again and again.

Caylee noticed his erratic movements. "... Emmett?" he didn't stop. "Emmett, what's wrong?" she got up and rushed to the bedside. "Something's wrong!"
